Dumortierite Meaning – General Information and History.

Dumortierite is a blue to blue grey and sometimes a pink to brown coloured stone. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, and usually found in massive form. It is transparent to translucent with a dull to vitreous lustre and has a Mohs hardness of 7.

Dumortierite, also called the “blue denim stone” was first described in 1881 and named after the French palaeontologist Eugene Dumortier. It is used in the manufacture of high-grade porcelain, especially for use where extremely high-temperature resistance is required.
