Aquamarine is a clear to opaque, light blue to light green variety of Beryl, which is a member of the Feldspar group. It belongs to the Hexagonal crystal system and has a Mohs hardness of 7.5 – 8.

The name Aquamarine comes from the Latin aqua marinus, meaning “water of the sea”. Aquamarine is a divine and eternal colour that is in tune with water and its life-giving properties. Being attuned to the ocean it also helps us to get in touch with the nature spirits of the sea. It promotes safe travel on water so it would be a good stone to take with you on a cruise. Legend says that it has its origin in the treasure chest of the mermaids. In ancient times sailors often carried it as a talisman to protect themselves from drowning and it is still reputed to be a lucky stone for sailors today.

In 1953, Queen Elizabeth II received a gift of an Aquamarine necklace and matching earrings for her coronation, from the president and people of Brazil. The Brazilian government also sent a gift, a 1300 carat faceted stone, to the wife of the US president Franklin D Roosevelt; it currently resides in the Presidential Library. Aquamarine is the official stone of Colorado, the 38th state of America.
