Shungite Meaning – General Information.
Shungite has a long and interesting history both above and below ground. In 1879 the Russian geologist Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Inostrantsev named it after the deposits he found near the village of Shunga in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Shungite is a black, lustrous, non-crystalline mineraloid primarily composed of carbon and rates 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Some geologists say it is as much as 2 billion years old. Shungite has gained popularity in the realm of metaphysical and healing properties in recent years.
In the Crystal Bible 3, Judy Hall states “Shungite contains virtually all the minerals in the periodic table.” Furthermore, she says “it may have been instrumental in creating life on earth.”
Actually, Shungite has also been of interest to geologists and mineralogists mainly due to its unusual carbon-rich composition. Scientists are studying it to better understand its geological origins and unique carbon structures. Of great interest is the creation of its natural fullerenes. (These are hollow crystalline formations of carbon molecules). Furthermore, it’s the only known natural source of the C60 and C70 fullerenes, and the reason for its reference as the Miracle Stone.
Scientists are still studying how we can use such powerful material, so full of potential. Current applications being studied include its use as a superconductor for electricity, rocket fuel propulsion, and medical nanotechnology.
Shungite Meaning – History.
Shungite has been a useful folk medicine since the early 18th century. In 1714, Peter the Great set up Russia’s first spa in Karelia, making good use of the Shungite waters healing properties. As he had personally experienced its healing benefits, he instigated its use for the Russian army. These waters were renowned throughout Russian history for their purity and healing abilities.
Interest in Shungite faded after Peter the Great’s death and continued until Russian scientists started new studies in 1930. Then discontinued these due to the war. In the 1960’s studies recommenced due to a major spike in interest. These continue to this day because of the discovery of the natural fullerenes. Scientists worldwide are continuing to study Shungite with great excitement.
Dwellings and sacred sites dating back to about 6,000 BCE exist at Lake Onega. This area is sacred to the Sami shamans, as a place of power and very pure water. Amongst ancient cultures, Shungite treated allergies, skin diseases, diabetes mellitus, periodontal disease, stomatitis, hair loss, cosmetic flaws, and many other diseases.
Shungite is currently and has been since the middle of the 18th century used as a black pigment for paint. In the 1970s, it was utilised in the production of an insulating material, known as shungisite. Shungite also has applications in construction technologies.
Current Times
Russia has used Shungite for centuries as a natural water purifier. In 2006 Saint Petersburg University confirmed that Shungite acts as a natural antibacterial filter. In recent years, there has been some interest in incorporating Shungite into water filtration systems or as an additive to water filters to potentially remove impurities and contaminants. However, scientific research remains limited. With the increasing concern over electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by electronic devices, there has been a growing market for EMF protection products. Shungite is quite useful in the manufacturing of items such as phone cases, pendants, and stickers that offer EMF protection. These products appeal to individuals looking to reduce their exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
Shungite is unassuming in appearance but carries a lot of weight in the healing and metaphysical world. This humble stone may very well become of key importance to humanity if we believe what science has to say. Belief is that Shungite deposits occur in areas, that were biologically rich lagoons over two billion years ago. In 1992 the discovery of naturally occurring fullerenes in Shungite ignited current interest in this mineral.
Shungite’s unique appearance, with its black, lustrous surface, has made it a popular choice for artists and decorators. It is useful for creating sculptures, jewellery, and home decor items. Its aesthetic appeal and metaphysical properties make it attractive to those seeking both artistic and spiritual elements in their surroundings.
