Chiastolite Meaning – General Information.

Chiastolite is a variety of Andalusite that contains a naturally occurring cruciform pattern or black cross, also known as the “Cross Stone”. It occurs in brown, grey, reddish brown, and olive green varieties. The name Chiastolite derives from the Greek “chiastos” meaning cruciform or cross marked. In some ancient texts, Chiastolite is also called “Lapis crucifer”, which literally means “cross stone”.

It is a prismatic metamorphic rock and is a polymorph with two other crystals or minerals – Kyanite and Sillimanite. (A polymorph is a mineral that shares the same chemistry but a different crystal structure with another, or other minerals). Chiastolite contains black or brown clay and/or carbonaceous material inclusions in the crystal. These inclusions are arranged in regular symmetrical shapes. Usually, they are in the form of a cross or X. This stone has a Mohs hardness of 7.5.
