Ametrine Meaning – General Information.
Ametrine, also known as Trystine or by its trade name as Bolivianite, is a naturally occurring variety of Quartz. It is a mixture of Amethyst and Citrine with zones of purple and yellow or orange. However, it is still a crystal in its own right and not just a mixture of its two cousins. It has a Mohs Hardness of 7 with a trigonal crystal structure.
The name Ametrine relates to the merging of Amethyst and Citrine and this crystal embodies the vibrations and qualities of both of these stones yet presented in their own unique way.
The different colour zones visible within Ametrine are due to differing oxidation states of iron within the crystal. The different oxidation states occur due to a temperature gradient across the crystal during its formation.
Only two places on the entire planet have just the right circumstances to form Ametrine Crystals; the Anahi Mine in Bolivia and the Hyderabad Mine in India. The Bolivian mine yields about 90% of Ametrine being marketed today and its limited availability places it among an elite group.
Ametrine Meaning – History.
This duel-colour gemstone seems to have a double history. Most geological references state that Ametrine was first brought to the market in the 1970s. Except there is another tale that dates back to the conquistadors that tells a quite different story.
During the 17th century, a conquistador named Don Felipe married Anakha, the princess to the Aureiros tribe of Bolivia. The mine, named Anahi for the princess, was given to him as part of her dowry. Felipe and his princess bride wanted to return to Spain and as the couple attempted to depart angry tribesmen turned on them and murdered the young princess. The duo coloured gem is said to represent the princess’ two loyalties: one to her husband and the other to her tribe.
Legend has it that Ametrine was first introduced to Europe by the conquistador gifting the mine to the Spanish Queen upon his return. It soon found its way into the jewellery trade and the bi-colours of Ametrine continue to be extremely popular today.
With its own dramatic formation process creating unique energies, Ametrine is very much its own crystal, with its own story as well.
