It is also one of the zodiac stones for those born under the sign of Capricorn,

Garnet Meaning – General Information


Garnet is a very common and plentiful stone and can be found in many areas around the world. There are different forms according to its mineral base; Almandine, Andradite, Demantoid, Grossular, Hessonite, Pyrope, Rhodalite, Spessatite, Tsavorite and Uvarovite.  A common misconception is that all Garnets are red when actually they come in a wide variety of colours including purple, red, orange, yellow, green, brown and black. Blue is very rare.

It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 and belongs to the isometric crystal system. The main crystal shapes of Garnets are dodecahedral and trapezohedral.

Garnet comes from the 14th‑century Middle English word gernet, meaning ‘dark red’. It is borrowed from Old French grenate and from Latin granatus, from granum meaning ‘grain or seed’.

Garnet honours Sekhmet, the Egyptian Goddess of War. An Enhancer Strengthener crystal, and worn for many centuries in the past as a protective and powerful talisman.

Garnets are a group of silicate minerals that have been in use since the Bronze Age as both gemstones and abrasives. All types of Garnets have similar physical properties and crystal forms, however, differ in chemical composition.

Garnet has been widely known for thousands of years, and it has long been known as The Warriors Stone. Carried by soldiers the world over as a talisman against death and injury, as well as to bring victory, peace and tranquillity. Many courageous travellers and explorers wore Garnets for protection, with these being popular talismans and protective stones.

Garnet not only holds the power to protect its wearer from negative energies but can also send those negative energies back to where they originated from. Garnet has been used as an adornment for thousands of years and is one of the stones in the breastplate of the high priest.

According to the Talmud, the light on Noah’s ark came from by a large Garnet. They were also popular in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. In Europe during the Middle Ages, Garnet was used for enhancing truth, faith and constancy. Also to dispel melancholy.

Some Asiatic tribes launched Garnets from their sling bows, then later as bullets. The principle being that as a blood-coloured projectile it would inflict a more deadly wound than a regular bullet. These were used by the rebellious Hanzas, during their hostilities in 1892, with the British troops on the Kashmir frontier, with many of these Garnet missiles now preserved as curiosities.

Today, Garnet is worn ornamentally in beautiful jewellery. It also has many industrial uses, from sandpaper and abrasives, to watch gears and scientific instruments.
