Black Obsidian Meaning – General Information.

Black Obsidian (lapis obsidianus), was so named in the discourse of Natural History written by the elder, Pliny of Rome. He referred to a volcanic glass discovered in Ethiopia by Obsidius, a Roman explorer. It naturally occurs as a type of volcanic glass and forms when molten lava comes into contact with water, thereby forcing it to cool quickly. Resulting in an amorphous (lacking an inner structure) stone with a glossy, glassy texture.

Black Obsidian is a distinctive stone and is sometimes classified as a mineraloid with high silica content. Its dark colour comes from its iron and magnesium content. It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 and is a translucent, siliceous glassy stone with a vitreous lustre.

Black Obsidian has been revered since ancient times as one of the foremost barter materials. Prized for its ability to produce razor-sharp edges it has been used since prehistoric times for making cutting and piercing tools, including axes, arrows and spears for hunting and as weapons. It has long been used for making decorative objects and jewellery and polished to make Black Obsidian mirrors and crystal balls.
