Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral that crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. It is an opaque, banded stone, the colours in the bands range from a very light green to a very deep green.

Because of its distinctive bright green colour and its presence in the weathered zone of nearly all copper deposits, Malachite serves as a prospecting guide for that metal. Malachite is used as an ornamental stone and as a gemstone.

The stone derives its name from the Greek meaning, "mallow-green stone", and was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the Mallow plant. Malachite was used as a mineral pigment in green paints from antiquity until about 1800, when it was replaced by a synthetic. It is also used for decorative purposes, such as the large Malachite vase featured in the Malachite Room in the Hermitage. A gift from Tsar Nicholas II and one of the largest pieces of Malachite in North America, "The Tazza", stands as the focal point in the centre of the room of Linda Hall Library.

Malachite is extensively mined at ‘King Solomon's Mines’ in the Timna valley, in Israel. Archaeological evidence indicates that Malachite has been mined and smelted here for over 3,000 years, although research has revealed an interruption in mining activity at the site during the 10th century BC, at the time of the biblical Solomon.

This stone was discovered in ancient times by the Egyptians. It has been worn by many civilizations for the purpose of protection from black magic and sorcery and used in amulets to protect against the evil eye. In the Middle Ages it was used to protect children from witches and other dangers. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used Malachite for jewellery and ground it to use as eye shadow.

In ancient Egypt this stone was used by the upper class for power, the pharaohs headdress was often lined with Malachite, as this was said to raise the ruler's vibrations to a higher level and open him to wise council.

Malachite is often referred to as the Peacock Stone, as it was considered sacred to the goddess Juno, whose sacred bird was the peacock. Also, the eye like pattern within the stone resembles the eye like pattern on peacock feathers.
