Celestite, also known as Celestine, derives its name from the Greek cœlestis, meaning celestial or heavenly and was so named by Abraham Gottlieb Werner in 1799. Celestite occurs as crystals that are usually found growing within geodes as well as in compressed massive and fibrous forms. Although it is commonly known for its light blue colouring, in its purest form it is clear or colourless, and rarely occurs with white, grey, yellow, orange and reddish brown colouring. It is quite fragile, has a Mohs Hardness of 3 – 3.5 and an orthorhombic crystal structure. It is a transparent to translucent crystal with a vitreous or pearly lustre.

Celestite is the primary source of the element strontium, which is commonly used in fireworks and in various metal alloys.

Celestite is a high vibration stone, sometimes referred to as the ‘Stone of the Heavens’. It is said to be an angelic stone that helps you access and communicate with celestial or higher dimensions. It is known to facilitate communication with the angel realm, your guardian angels and spirit guides.

An interesting Celestite fact:

Celestite crystals are often found in geodes. The world’s largest known Celestite geode is located near the village of Put-in-Bay, Ohio, on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. It is 10.7 m or 35 feet in diameter at its widest point. It has been converted into a crystal viewing cave, by removing the crystals from floor of the geode. The geode has Celestite crystals as wide as 46 cm or 18 inches across and estimated to weigh up to 135 kg or 300 pounds each.
